Funding Needed for Flood Victims

As flood waters have begun to subside down the Mississippi river, the Red Cross continues to operate shelters, readying supplies and providing food and refreshments to relief workers throughout the affected areas.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter has deployed four local volunteers to Cedar Rapids, Iowa: Harold Boudreaux (serving as a service associate), Mary Ann Wells (serving as a service associate), Margaret Allington (serving as a client caseworker) and Grady Carden (serving as a warehouse manager). These South Mississippians will remain in Cedar Rapids, for three weeks to help that community recuperate from the disaster. [Read More]
AMERICAN RED CROSS PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON 2008

The American Red Cross Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter is preparing for Hurricane Season 2008. Executive Director, Bill Brent and Emergency Services Director, Bob Beebe have met with the Emergency Management Agency Directors from across the tri-county area to review their plan of action. Should a hurricane strike the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Red Cross will assist in opening and staffing emergency shelters and providing provisions to Gulf Coast residents.
The Red Cross is seeking individuals to become trained in Red Cross disaster response protocols to serve as volunteers during a disaster. The following training courses will be provided for community members interested in serving during a disaster:
Red Cross Delivers Help After Southern Storms

A line of thunderstorms and tornadoes swept across the midsection of the United States late Tuesday, killing more than 50 people, injuring scores of others, and destroying hundreds of homes and buildings. Red Cross chapters responded immediately during the night, opening shelters and providing comfort to those forced from their homes. Two local volunteers, Will Esteve and Hank DeSandre, have been deployed to assist with the response, along with the MS Gulf Coast Chapter's emergency response vehicle; possibly more will be deployed in the coming days.
