Thanks for supporting ‘Stamp Out Hunger’

— To the editor:
On behalf of the Board of Directors, volunteers, staff, and clients of the Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross, I wish to say a very special thank you to the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 1437 of Laurel, Ellisville and Waynesboro for their recent sponsorship of the May “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. Additional thanks to the Rural Letter Carriers in the area as well and to the United States Postal Service for allowing the drive to happen.

Our organization depends on this food to provide food for local families who lose their homes due to fire. This time of year our food pantry gets bare and the drive always helps us to make it until the holiday food drives at the end of the year.

The real thanks for the day goes to the carriers both city and rural. The drive involves much more time and much more effort than their usual Saturday routes. Some of them have been involved in the project since its beginning some 14 years ago.
And, finally thanks to all of you who put food on or near your mailbox May 9th. Without your help we would not be able to continue the services we provide for fire families. We are always so pleased to see so many people get involved in the drive and actually reach out to their neighbors through this project. As the saying goes, “the best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your arm!”

Again thanks to all involved from the drivers who followed the carriers to those who sorted all 48,000 pounds of food. Because you cared, we are able to help meet needs in Jones, Smith, Wayne and Jasper Counties.
