Free health screenings and health care information were given to Jones County residents attending an Wednesday evening health fair sponsored by Pathway Community Church in the Powers Community.
Free services included blood pressure screenings, body fat screening and grip strength and glucose screening. Participating organizations included:
• South Central Mississippi Regional Medical Center,
• South Central Recovery Center,
• South Central Wellness Center,
• South Central Senior Care,
• Mississippi State Department of Health,
• Comfort Care Hospice,
• The American Red Cross, and
• The Domestic Abuse Family Shelter, Inc.
Pastor Nate Blackledge said the health fair gives “everyone in the Powers Community an opportunity to receive valuable information for the various health agencies in the area.”
Marta Carmichal of the State Department of Health commended the church for putting on the health fair. A registered dental hygienist, said “it’s a good opportunity to inform people about the services we provide.
“The office of oral health is one of our newer programs,” she said. “We promote good oral health in adults and children.”
Carmichal explained that the Department of Health visits daycares and other places to promote good oral hygiene. She also noted that most adults that have dental problems are not receiving the care they need because they can’t afford it.
Carmichal added there are programs in place to assist those who may need financial assistance. Interested people should inquire at their local health department.
Kimberly Smith, who works with the Domestic Abuse Family Shelter, said there are so much valuable information the people in the community need to know about.
“The church is a good place for them to get the information they need,” she added. “Not many people want to address such issues as dating violence and domestic violence, but it’s happening in our community.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to share some information and to let people know we are here to help.”
